There was something to those humans. But what was it? Why did the Dual Blade choose them?
My Mission is to know the truth
Even though Erim was a Sinistral--on the side of evil--she assists her enemies the humans. Humans intrigued her so. Taking on a human form using the name Iris, she enlists Maxim as the 'one who must journey' and watches over him on his quest to accquire the Dual Blade--the one weapon that can defeat the Sinistrals. Sadly though they can never be completely destroyed unless she is too. The other Sinistrals could continue to revive as long as she lived feeding off her lifeforce. But should she sacrifice herself? Turn her back completely on her kind? Would it be worth it?
But I helped you more than I should have... I don't know myself why I did so...
It is not known then why she even began to help Maxim in the first place when simply having the Dual Blade would not be enough for the humans. But she saw something through him. Throughout the journey she rescued him, guided him, mourned with him. She was changing... Was it admiration? Love? Or the knowledge that she was coming closer to the truth? Or all of the above?
What was this? This...the power the humans possessed to 'continue on'. It was only right to bow down to them and let them rule. Maxim was able to destroy the Sinistrals for the time being and thrawt their final plot (with Erim's last bout of energy), but at the cost of his life.
In Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, Erim is reborn (after a previous attempted defeat) as Lufia, a 'normal' human girl with extraodinary magical talent . She assits Maxim's descendent Hero (whom she evidently grows up with), in reaquiring the Dual Blade after the Sinistrals resurface again. She is unware of her past or the reasoning as to why the Sinistrals 'want her back' until later in the game.
16 years ago, I was born as Lufia. But I was Erim long before
that...I am the Sinistral Erim. Even if you defeat Amon, Daos, and
Gades....they'll return again as long as I live.
Upon realizing what she is and knowing the threat of the Sinistrals will never stop, she tries to give up her life in the final battle. Her sacrifice ultimately breaks the link between her and the other Sinistrals and she is reborn as a normal human girl...for now
Her Many Forms
Her main Sinistral form. Erim is first seen in the introduction and later on in the Tower of Truth infront of the mirror and the final battle. She appears again in the beginning of Lufia I.
Erim's human disguise in Lufia II. Erim appears in this form before Maxim to assist him in his journey. Since this form is quite different from her actual, Maxim doesn't realize who she is until after reckonizing the similarities between the two auras.
Erim's reborn form in Lufia I. She mysteriously appears at age 7 and meets Hero. She remains in this form throughout the entire game. This form however does look more similar to her Sinistral form than did her human form of Iris.
What's In Her Names?
According to Kabalarian Philosophy
Erim
The name of Erim contains within it an intense emotional power that could drive you to put forth great effort to accomplish your ambitions and to do something noteworthy and worthwhile. There are humanitarian ideals in this name, making you feel the urge to champion the cause of the downtrodden, the victims of circumstances and injustices. However, it is difficult for you to materialize your ideals because of a restless, unsettled feeling which causes you never to know just what it is that you should be working toward, and the very intensity of your nature makes systematic concentration and application a challenge. You can have intensely contrasting feelings toward people, either you are fiercely loyal or extremely intolerant. There is rarely a happy medium in your feelings. Consequently, you experience many disappointments in people, tragedy, and the loss of the very things for which you may be intensely striving. Bitter experiences could make you cynical, critical, and argumentative. You find it difficult to see the brighter or humorous side of a situation. This name makes you nervous and highly strung, causing tension affecting your nervous system and solar plexus.
Lufia
Your first name of Lufia has made you a patient, meticulous person who enjoys working in a detailed, systematic way. You are determined and deliberate in pursuing your ambitions, but you must work at your own speed. You hate to be hurried or to leave anything unfinished or untidy. Your infinite patience would allow you to develop intricate, involved skills to perfection. Often feeling burdened with work, you worry about details out of proportion to their importance. Having definite ideas, you are skeptical and do not change easily, for you require proof, preferably in complete detail before you will alter an opinion. Once you are settled into a situation, you do not like to move or make changes. When on a schedule, you follow it implicitly. Your sense of values emphasizes material things, with little appreciation towards the more artistic, philosophical, or inspirational matters.
Iris
Your name of Iris has given you an idealistic nature with a desire to help others. Your initiative often causes you to be the first to act when you see a need. Since you are impressionable and receptive, you feel the misfortunes of others very keenly. However, this name makes it awkward for you to express your deeper thoughts and feelings with finesse and diplomacy to the extent that your candid, sometimes blunt, manner of speaking creates misunderstandings with others. Being somewhat self-centred, you learn through your own experiences, as you rarely take advice from others. Yet, you are sensitive and very easily hurt and offended. You long for praise and appreciation for your efforts, but others find it difficult to understand you. You dislike monotony and system and enjoy being creative in an inventive way whether it be in interior decorating, music, art, crafts, or other endeavours that require versatility and skill. You are imaginative and visionary, somewhat of a perfectionist, yet the results of your efforts often fall short of your high expectations. A leadership position appeals to you because you would enjoy directing others rather than being directed. Your feelings are strong and you tend to react intensely to situations.
